FilmMarkle

FilmMarkle is the portfolio of Brooklyn-based photographer Ashley Markle. When she first came to me to build her website, I wasn’t completely sure how to approach it. Most of the sites I had worked on were for small brands, where the goal was usually pretty clear: guide someone toward a product, service, or purchase.

Here, the answer was much simpler — the photography was the product.

We built the site around an almost endless scroll of Ashley’s intimate, editorial work, with very little getting between the viewer and the images. No heavy messaging, complicated navigation, or unnecessary sections. Sometimes less really is more, and this was one of those projects.

Design Goals

Ashley wanted the site to feel clean, modern, and editorial, with the kind of restraint you’d expect from a photography publication. We eventually landed on Roboto for its neutral, editorial feel and kept everything else intentionally quiet.

The goal was never to design something that competed with the work. It was to create a frame for it — simple enough to disappear once you started scrolling.

The Build

I built the site on WordPress, which gave me the control I needed without overcomplicating a project that required very little functionality. The structure was intentionally simple, making it easy to update the photography while keeping the experience consistent.

The site stayed live for about three years before Ashley’s creative instincts kicked in again and she decided it was time to reinvent it. Since then, she’s gone on to shoot for publications and brands including The New York Times, New York Magazine, i-D, and others.

The original site has since been retired, but I still think of it pretty fondly — a simple project that knew exactly what it needed to be.
